Gransfors Bruk Large Carving Hatchet, Carved Handle

5/5 1 review

Same head as the Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet and Hand Hatchet but with addition of an exquisite carved handle.

The carved handle improves balance, grip and control and therefore its usefulness as an axe for craft work.

Lighter weight axe that will find many uses in green wood working, particularly spoon carving.

Available in 3 different grinds:

  • Double-sided Ground with equal bevels, suitable for right and left handed users.  Equal bevels makes this the most generally useful axe especially when removing wood from slightly concave features, such as spoon blanks. Will more willingly go where you want it to go compared to Right or Left Ground Axes. For most people, equal bevels, a relatively thin bit and lighter weight will make this a good axe for smaller projects and for people who find the Large Carving Axe too heavy.
  • Right Ground is a handed axe suitable only for right-handed users. Asymetric bevels, short on the right, long on the left. Right Ground axes work in a slightly different way,  they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces.  They don't come well out of concave shapes. Preparing smaller billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of smaller bowl blanks is work the Right Ground, Large Carving Hatchet will excell at.
  • Left Ground is a handed axe suitable only for left-handed users. Asymetric bevels, short on the left, long on the right. Left Ground axes work in a slightly different way,  they cut at a lower angle, 'biting' readily and work on straight or convex surfaces.  They don't come out of concave shapes. Preparing smaller billets ready for the pole lathe and shaping the outside of smaller bowl blanks is work the Left Ground, Large Carving Hatchet will excell at.

  • An excellent small axe

The Gransfors Large Carving Hatchet (with carved beech handle) was the first purchase I made from Maurice at Woodsmith and it was a great choice to get me started making spoons two years back. As with all GB axes, they are beautifully made, nicely finished and come with a good leather sheath. At 600g and with a 3” cutting edge, this is not a large or heavy axe and whilst it’ll lose wood quickly on small to medium spoon blanks, ideally you’d need something with more heft for larger items. That said, this is lovely axe in the hand and may well be suited to those who cannot hold the weight of larger axes or, for those with smaller hands. I prefer the carved handle to the smooth finished hickory type, it seems surer in grip and there’s no ‘rotation’ when in use. Mine had a lot of use and was a great first axe; it did everything I asked of it, still does! It chokes up quite well, takes and holds a very sharp edge, what else do you need from such a compact tool?! It’s a good ‘carry’ axe and needs little room if packed.

A very good starter axe and, great value for such a quality tool, thus highly recommended.
