Morris HAMPSHIRE HURDLER’S Billhook is a traditional pattern billhook for hurdle makers. Designed to trim up weavers when making hazel or willow hurdles.
Sometimes called a hurdlers trimming hook.
Made entirely in the UK.
Unusually for a billhook, the cutting edge is dog-legged, so the front part essentially functions like an axe. To our knowledge, only Morris of Dunsford are still making this pattern of billhook.
Could also be used to harvest and work-up coppice material but what makes this a more specialist billhook for hurdle makers is the dog-leg cutting edge.
Like all Morris billhooks the cutting bevels are long without shoulders and ground to about 20 degrees. This gives the tool great cutting ability.
The tang runs the full length of the handle.
The caulked oval handle, made of varnished ash, is 140mm (5 1/2″) long. The blade is approx. 230mm (8″) long. Overall length approx. 370mm (13 1/2″).
Edge tool making has been an industry at the Morris Dunsford works for more than 100 years. Despite a lack of finish, a bit of roughness to the handles and the cutting edge, their billhooks are better than anything else on the market. An uneven cutting edge with some flats are typical straight from the forge.
THIS TOOL WILL NEED GRINDING, SHARPENING AND HONING BEFORE USE.
Available, either as they come straight from the forge or … ground and sharpened by us to a ready-to-use condition.
SELECT THE ‘WORKSHOP SERVICE – Sharpening’ OPTION ABOVE AND WE WILL DO THIS FOR YOU.
The carbon steel blade is hand forged and will take and hold a great edge.
A WOODSMITH SHEATH Hampshire Hurdler’s Billhook, is highly recommended. This will to help keep the cutting edge sharp and to protect you from accidental injury.
