Description

The Kalthoff SMALL CARVING AXE is a specialty axe and a precision tool. Useful when removing lots of material and fine cutting surfaces.

Perfect for greenwood craft, sloyd and of course spoon carving.

An axe that will work well for beginners and experienced carvers. It has been developed in cooperation with renowned Swedish wood carver Beth Moen.

The 550 gram axe head is easy to swing. The axe is balanced just below the axe head. This balance makes every gram work to your advantage, so when you need more power the axe feels larger.

Superior steel and hardening.

Made from carbon molybden steel and this, combined with a solid heat treatment makes the edge have exceptional edge holding properties. Tests shows a remarkable difference.

The edge comes sharp and ready to use and will hold this edge for a long time.

Hardened to 57 Rockwell, to ensure good edge retention. When sharpening is required, the long slightly concave bevels makes this an easier task.

Knut Östgård:  “I am very satisfied with it. The balance, weight, size, sharpness and handle length. I can easily carve with precise chops.”

Beth Moen:  “It works excellent. Distinct feel, good balance and good for removing material”.

Strong and flexing ash handles

The handle is made using Swedish native wood for it’s good properties as axe handle material, and to cherish the long and rich history of Swedish axe culture. The idea is to get raw materials as close as possible, and not cross the stream to get water.

The choice of ash for the handle is because it is a hard wood and tough to endure a bad hit, but also elastic enough to flex and pick up vibrations to protect the hands from the strike. It is traditionally used for axe handles in southern Sweden. The ash used grows in northern Skåne. The color of the wood is light in the sapwood and darker brown in the heartwood. The grain is distinct, making it very beautiful.

Handles are made first by turning and then by hand shaving, leaving quite subtle longitudinal facets which is good for grip. Finally, the handle is given a coat of raw linseed oil.

The handling is done with great care. Both handle and wooden wedge are fitted furniture dry (8-10% moisture) so there is very little chance of the handle coming loose. The wedge is secured with wood glue. There’s no steel wedge, since it does not effect the durability or performance of the axe, only making rehandling more difficult.

Vegetable tanned leather sheath

Comes fitted with a vegetable tanned leather sheath. The sheaths are made from selected premium quality hides which are a by-product from local meat farmers in Uppland. The leather is tanned using only bark and water.
