The James Mursell SPOKESHAVE is designed and made in the UK by a practicing windsor chair maker.
Features all the good things about a traditional wooden bodied spokeshave but with a modern adjustable blade.
James developed this tool to make fine accurate cuts in Windsor chairmaking, a job at which it excels.
We use them a lot to size leg tenons to an exact size and to finely shape the outside of wooden bowls.
Two sizes available:
SELECT FROM THE DROP-DOWN BOX ABOVE
Wooden body made of wood, either hard maple, walnut or lacewood. 270mm (10 5/8″) x 40mm (1 1/2″) x 20mm (3/4″).
The high carbon steel Ron Hock blade is finely adjustable with the allen-key supplied. The two small grub screws visible between the knurled brass knobs are threaded into the body of the spokeshave and pass all the way through. The bottom of the grub screws are in contact with the blade and the exact position of the grub screws sets the blade when it is pulled up tight with the brass knobs.
Blade has a 70mm (2 3/4″) edge made from A2 tool steel.
Comes fitted with a thick brass wear-plate directly in front of the cutting edge. Under most conditions this will last a lifetime, and if the blade is only ground occasionally, the complete tool will give a lifetime of service.
James Mursell SPOKESHAVE is finished to a high standard. One feature we particularly like is being able to drop the blade back into the body when not in use, therefore protecting the edge.
Sharpen the bevel on an ordinary bench stone with the tangs overhanging the sides. Remove the burr on the flat side on an ordinary Fine flat stone then finish on leather, as always.
