Typically used to force apart stubborn firewood rounds.
Drive the wedge into the round either with a Splitting Maul (with a specially hardened poll) or a sledge hammer.
These wedges are twisted and ribbed to force the wood fibers apart reducing the likehood of it getting stuck or bouncing back out.
Always wear safety goggles when doing this.
Better to work with two wedges in case one gets stuck.
In our own green wood working business we use steel (and wooden) wedges to split butts of oak for riven oak fencing and other products.
2 kg in weight, made from Swedish carbon steel, hardened to 56-58 Rockwell.
Sharpened and ready to go.
