Spoon and Bowl Carving at Laya Point

5/5 3 reviews

A special two day course in the heart of Cumbria.

Making Hand Carved Wooden Spoons    (1 day)

Saturday 22 April 2017

Making Hand Carved Wooden Bowls     (1 day)

Sunday 23 April 2017

Cost:  £210

Tutor: Maurice Pyle - Woodsmith

Venue: Laya Point Permaculture, Ulpha, Cumbria

On this very hands-on course, held in the breath-taking Duddon Valley, part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, the technical and safety aspects of using carving axes and knives will be taught so that in no time at all we can concentrate on making beautiful spoons and bowls for eating, serving, stirring, mixing and ladeling, in a kind of soul poetry for the kitchen kind of way.

Tutor Maurice Pyle has been a full-time traditional wood craftsman for more than twenty years and the founder of the greenwood book and tool emporium 'The Woodsmith's Store'

Organisers Laya Point was established in 2012 by Nicole Hermes and Tom Dennison, and is the creative offshoot of Laya Point Permaculture which works and plays at the Old School, Ulpha, situated in the breath-taking Duddon Valley which is part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria.  There are forests on both sides of the river, bracken-covered fells and rocky outcrops dominate the landscape.  The valley and local area resonates with life and with these courses.........hand craft and creativity.

The course workshop, the beautifully proportioned old school hall, overlooks the surrounding fells and hills through large expansive windows. Ground source heated, it's an airy space with light beaming in from all directions, difficult to imagine a more perfect place to relax and learn a new hand craft.

A delicious lunch is provided and lovely inexpensive self catering accommodation available nearby.
