Classic pole lathe turning tool with a handle length that is appropriate for pole lathe use.
The main function of a roughing-out gouge is to do the initial rounding-up your billet (or blank). It is the first tool to use on a billet that has been roughly rounded by a drawknife and shavehorse. It's a straight-forward and forgiving tool to use.
Total length 410mm (16 1/4") including beech handle.
Made from high carbon steel the cutting edge is 32mm (1 1/4") from corner to corner, it has a shallow sweep.
The bevel is hollow ground to 30 degrees and will need a final hone before use.
Only suitable for use on a pole lathe.
An alternative to this tool would be the Ashley Iles Carving Gouge 1 1/4 x 7.
Included our Pole Lathe Set I.
